Group: One-fifth world's reefs destroyed

Monday, April 25, 2005
(Reuters) -- The demise of the world's coral reefs could threaten coastal communities as global fish stocks fall, an international conservation group said on Monday.

A fifth of the world's reefs have been damaged beyond repair, the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) said.

"Coral reefs are some of the oldest and most diverse ecosystems on the planet," according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Web site.
