The tiny car that won over ropeans with its cute looks and very high mileage is finally coming to America, just not in the way you might expect it to.

MSNBC Automotive Writer Miguel Llanos writes that the 60-mpg two-seat couples are made by a European company called smart, but the DaimlerChrylser division is not the one selling them here anytime soon. True, they will be sold in Canada starting in September, but not so in the United States.

ZAP unveils hydrogen fuel cell breakthrough

POMPANO BEACH, Florida (August 31, 2004) - Advanced automotive technology pioneer ZAP (OTC BB: ZAPZ) announced today a breakthrough electric propulsion system that uses a new hydrogen fuel cell and lead-cobalt battery design developed by Apollo Energy Systems.

ZAP announced that it would develop a prototype fuel cell car with Apollo Energy Systems using the Smart city coupe imported from Europe.

August 17, 2004 -- Californians say they will be more conscious of air quality and fuel economy when the go to buy or lease their next car, according to a recent statewide survey.

Californians may warm to the new direct-import internal combustion Smart Car, which reportedly achieves over 60 mpg and is neither hybrid nor electric.
